Radio Awakened episode 48 – Capt. Robert Koffman, M.D.

Robert Koffman, MD, MPH, is a retired Navy, Medical Corps Captain, continuing to serve Active Duty and Veteran populations as a Red Cross volunteer. Capping an acclaimed 32-year career as a psychiatrist and preventive medicine physician, his terminal assignment was as the Chief of Clinical Operations at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) aboard the Walter Reed campus in Bethesda, Maryland. As the Navy’s first head of Combat and Operational Stress Control (COSC Consultant), he advised the Navy Surgeon General as Navy Medicine’s inaugural Director for Psychological Health. Twice the Navy lead on a blue-ribbon panel (2004, 2010), he helped establish DoD/VA Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Clinical Practice Guidelines. Deploying to Desert Storm, Operational Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom, he has provided behavioral health care services for service members in a multitude of maritime, combat, and peace-keeping operations. During his last deployment to Afghanistan, in response to observing significant psychiatric morbidity among battalions of naval personnel augmenting the US Army, he created the Mobile Care Team, the first in-country, real-time surveillance team to monitor Individual Augment (IA) mental health morbidity. A passionate advocate for the promotion of non-stigmatizing (non-traditional) psychological services and integrative modalities, Koffman left active service in 2015 to begin his education in Psychedelic Assisted Therapies. A graduate of the California Institute of Integral Studies’ Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research, working with Sunstone Therapies, he is also on track to begin MDMA-AT for Veterans under Expanded Access at the Bill Richards’ Center for Healing at the Aquilino Cancer Center, Rockville, MD.
