Question of the Month: WHEN TO GET INVOLVED WHEN SOMEONE HURTS A LOVED ONE OF YOURS?

QUESTION:
When someone hurts one of your loved ones, how do you know when to get involved and when to stay out of it?

ANSWER:

The critical piece here is not so much “when” to stay out of something but “what” to stay out of. When a loved one gets hurt, it is important to be supportive. Hard hits are part of life, and we are all prey to these difficult hits. To expect to go through life without hits is like playing football and expecting not to get tackled. So I believe that the spiritual evolved view is that you attract everything that happens to you. Why? Because that is how you grow and how the Universe molds us. So the involvement for a loved one needs to be of compassionate support, with the awareness that the loved one is learning lessons from this hurt. Every cloud has a silver lining – the important question is not “why me” rather “why did I attract this to me?” I believe there is no escaping wrong-doing. Karma always balances. So I recommend that it is best to leave the offender to the Higher Power. Going into anger, resentment and hate hurts you and not the offender. It also often exasperates the situation. While this is a difficult response to make, in time one does look at these incidents as learning experiences that help strengthen spiritual resiliency.
