Monthly Musings: How to Turn Your Traumas into Treasures

Dear Friend,
Last month, I completed my 4th online master series: “Strengthen Your Spiritual Resiliency” which is a 4-day intensive immersion workshop that used to be a 2-day in-person experience prior to the pandemic. I have been doing this workshop for over 20 years and am grateful that most participants experience a transformative breakthrough.
One of the participants in this recent round is a writing teacher and took my workshop exercise: “what lessons can be learned from this tragedy?” and unpacked the essence of the inquiry into these two questions to make them super-charged:
1.   What would it be like if you could make the GIFTS that arise from the tragedy or challenge GREATER than the challenge itself?
2.    If you can do this, what specifically are the gifts that have come from this situation, and how can you shape them in such a way that they will be MOST HELPFUL and beneficial to others?
While I will personally answer these important and deeply introspective inquiries below, the biggest gift I offer you through this July 2021 musing are these two questions, thanks to a program participant.
I encourage all my readers to truthfully meditate on and journal their experiences of this past year as we gradually come out of particularly challenging 16-plus months. We are totally not out of it, but I believe we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Most of you, loyal readers, know that I was able to find the gift of spiritual purpose in the aftermath of the murder of my only son, Tariq—which to this day is still the biggest challenge I have ever faced. Seeing that there were victims on both ends of the gun, led me to forgive my son’s killer and establish the Tariq Khamisa FoundationTKF, now in its 26th year, helps save the lives of children and makes sure they do not end up dead like my son or end up in prison, like Tony. It is a miracle that Ples (Tony’s grandfather) and I have been partners in this work for many years and Tony has recently joined us in this effort. So, the gift that came from my tragedy inspired my spiritual purpose—which, to me, is mystically meaningful.
So, the question I would like to explore is “how did this vision manifest in my psyche?” The short answer is through my “spiritual radar.”
Where does the saying “trust your gut” actually come from? We navigate our daily lives and tasks using the five senses. Yet our sixth sense of intuition, or as called here your “spiritual radar,” is the most powerful and wisest of all our senses. This musing reviews the importance of intuition, and how to develop and use it to your advantage as a way to answer the questions from the opening of this newsletter. As Oprah Winfrey encourages, “Follow your instincts, that’s where true wisdom manifests itself.”
As you spiritually evolve and cultivate your intuition, you can start to rely on it for guidance in all areas of your life. This “spiritual radar” helps you navigate life with more ease, grace, and effectiveness than simply relying on your rational mind. We all know people who are unaware or dismissive of their own intuitive faculties which seriously limits their ability to respond to life’s challenges. If you want to be spiritually resilient, like I teach in my master series, it’s essential that you begin to use and rely on your spiritual radar.
If you don’t feel connected to your intuition, you are literally walking around handicapped. Intuition is not some extra special or outward gift that is given to some people and not to others. It is one of the senses you were born with to help you do your job as a human here on Earth. We are all intuitive and just as we rely on our five senses, we can develop our sixth and most powerful sense—intuition—by learning to identify it at work.
Most people make the mistake of relying almost entirely on their rational minds. It does not take a genius to realize this does them a serious disservice. Albert Einstein said, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”
Spiritually evolved people understand the immense importance of their intuitive powers. They understand that their five senses are like compasses and sextants, but that intuition is like spiritual radar. Radar, one of the most significant inventions of our time, allows you to “see” much more—see objects that are far and unobservable by sight. If you want to be able to respond with resilience to the above questions, then you need to figure out how to use your spiritual radar. Not to worry! You already have all the transmitters, receivers, and interpretive equipment—all you need to do is power them up and get comfortable using your inner technology.
Intuition is actually a pretty straightforward thing. It is really just about learning to listen and completely trust your inner voice. The most efficient way to do this is to create opportunities for solitude on a regular basis. Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, “Conversation enriches the understanding, but solitude is the school of genius.” Hans Margolius writes, “Only in quiet waters do things mirror themselves undistorted. Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world.” Begin to think about “alone time” as your chance to attend the School of Genius. When you shut yourself off from the noise of the world and tune yourself with the goings-on in your inner world, you open yourself to a source of guidance and wisdom beyond all measure.
According to Aristotle, “Intuition is the source of scientific knowledge.” This is further validated by Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine, who said, “It is always with excitement that I wake up in the morning wondering what my intuition will toss up to me, like the gifts from the sea. I work with it and rely on it. It’s my partner.” If you want to experience the full power of your spiritual resiliency—work with and rely on your intuition—make it your partner.
Spiritually evolved people consciously, confidently, and consistently listen to and follow their intuition. As Jonas Salk explains, “Intuition will tell the thinking mind where to look next.” When you learn to hear and rely upon your inner voice, you will be amazed at the ease and grace with which you will be able to navigate life and its challenges.
My own practice of developing my spiritual radar is meditation. In the same way that sensory experiences (music for your sense of hearing, artwork for your sense of sight, fragrance for the sense of smell, gourmet cuisine for your palate) are a feast for your five senses, meditation is a feast for your intuition. That is why I love to meditate daily and never miss a day.
You can download a free guided meditation to help in strengthening your intuition muscle to provide a new perspective in addressing the above two questions from my website www.azimkhamisa.com.
Peace, gratitude, and many blessings,
